Das „Fania“ liegt am Yppenplatz zwischen türkischen Bäckern, bosnischen Greißlern und hippen Szenelokalen. Vor zwei Monaten haben Lautaro Alava und Mario Cortés die lateinamerikanische Bar eröffnet. Siebzigerjahre-Salsa in Wohnzimmerlautstärke vermischt sich mit spanischem Geplauder zum dezenten Klangteppich. Das „Fania“ will nicht mit hektischen Rhythmen und knallbunt-exotischer Aufmachung mitteleuropäische Vorstellungen von Karibikflair kopieren. Genauso gut könnte das unaufdringlich eingerichtete Lokal im Zentrum Bogotás stehen, der Heimat seiner beiden Besitzer.

„Unsere Cocktails sind leistbar, und wir spielen keinen Reggeaton, sondern klassische Salsa.“ Daher auch der Name: „Fania“ ist ein Plattenlabel, das in den 70er-Jahren die renommiertesten Salsa-Musiker Lateinamerikas unter Vertrag nahm. „Wir haben bemerkt, dass unsere Musikauswahl Musiker anzieht. Es passiert immer wieder, dass ein Gast plötzlich eine Gitarre auspackt und improvisiert. Manchmal muss ich sie sogar stoppen, sonst hören sie gar nicht mehr auf“, schmunzelt Alava.

The Fania All-Stars was an illustrious and widely distinguished musical ensemble established in 1968 by composer Johnny Pacheco as a showcase for the leading musicians and singers of the record label Fania Records, the leading salsa record company of the time.

In 1964, Fania Records was founded in New York City by Jerry Masucci, an Italian-American lawyer with a love for Latin melodies, and Johnny Pacheco, a talented composer and bandleader born in the Dominican Republic. Jerry Masucci later bought out his partner Johnny Pacheco from Fania Entertainment Group Ltd. and was sole owner for many years until his death in December 1997.

Throughout the early years, Fania used to distribute its records to music aficionados around New York City, even going as far as selling their products out of the trunks of cars. But eventually good word-of-mouth and immense success from Johnny Pacheco’s Cañonasorecording would lead the label to develop its roster. Masucci and Pacheco, now executive negotiator and musical director, respectively, began acquiring fresh and creative NYC artists like Bobby Valentín,Larry Harlow and Ray Barreto.

Similar to Pacheco, most of these new talents were residents of the city’s barrios and boroughs, that had moved to the city from their homelands and brought their music along. Thus, Fania and it’s All-Stars were results of this era of musical renaissance and understanding among the countless cultures of NYC. They created tunes using a variety of genres available in this melting pot, including those of salsa, boogalu, Cuban Jazz and Latin R&B.

Fania Records wurde im Jahr 1963 vom Flötisten Johnny Pacheco und seinem Anwalt Jerry Masucci gegründet.

Der Name kommt von einem von Reinaldo Bolaños komponierten Son montuno. Am Anfang diente die Plattenfirma lediglich dazu, Johnny Pachecos Werke, aufgenommen mit seinem Orchester, zu vertreiben. Im Jahr 1968 bildeten die Künstler, die bei Fania unter Vertrag standen, die Band Fania All-Stars.

Fania dokumentierte einige Konzerte der Fania All-Stars auf Film, wodurch sie - wie das Woodstock-Festival - auch als Kinofilme und Videos vermarktet werden konnten ("Our Latin Thing", aufgenommen 1971 im Cheetah Club, New York, und "Live in Africa", 1972 im Umfeld des Rumble in the Jungle in Kinshasa).

Die besten und wichtigsten Musiker der lateinamerikanischen Welt haben im Laufe der Jahre bei "Fania All Stars" mitgewirkt, wie z.B. Mongo Santamaria, Cheo Feliciano, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barretto, Adalberto Santiago, Hector Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, Jose Mangual Jr., Larry Harlow, Roberto Roena, Justo Betancourt, Oscar_D’León und Willie Colon.

Ab den 1990er Jahren war das Label weitgehend inaktiv. 2006 kaufte V2 Records über sein Sublabel Emusica Fania auf, dabei tauchte ein Großteil der verloren geglaubten alten Masterbänder auf. Es wurden zahlreiche remasterte Wiederveröffentlichungen angekündigt.
